‘Bastille Day’ is just a few days away! This calls for a little soiree, don’t you think? After all, is there any better time to stuff ourselves silly with cheese, macarons and wine than on the day that started the French revolution? I think NON.
If you’re thinking about celebrating Bastille Day this week, here are a few ideas to get your party plans started:
Blue, red and white are the colors of the French flag so they’re the perfect color scheme for a Bastille Day party. (It’s also a good occasion to bring out your July 4th decorations if you live in the US!). That being said, if you feel like something different then you could always go with a black & white or ivory color scheme instead. Tres chic! Bunting would also make a nice festive addition, as would fairy lights and candles.
Champagne (or sparkling wine) is of course always a good idea for a French themed party but you could go the extra mile and serve your guests a welcome aperitif such as a Kir Royale or a French 75. As a non alcoholic option serve some Orangina or a ‘Diabolo menthe’ (lemonade mixed with a touch of mint-flavored syrup)
Keep the food to small bites and platters to avoid spending too much time in the kitchen. My ideal party menu would include:
- A cheese platter and/or a crudites platter
- Goats cheese and Caramelized onions tartlets
- Mini quiches
- Madeleines (or) macarons
Stripes are quintessentially French and although they might seem a bit cliche the truth is that us French girls love a good stripey outfit! Anything tailored and feminine would be lovely too. One note though – keep the accessories to a minimum and instead opt for a bright red lipstick.
Finally, no party would be complete without music. Websites such as 8 tracks or Sound cloud have lots of French music mixes available for free. For my french themed parties I love to play bands such as Phoenix, C2C, Pnau, Breakbot, Daft Punk and Justice.
Have you ever been to a ‘Bastille Day’ party? What’s your favorite French dish?
Happy Bastille Day!
