Abso-fuckin’-lutely: 12 Lessons I learned From Sex And The City

sex and the city rooftop party

If you’ve been reading Pretty Mayhem for a while you probably already know that I love ‘Sex and the City’. It’s one of my all-time favorite TV shows and although I’ve probably watched every episode about ten times I never get tired of revisiting them. I think the reason why I loved the show so much to begin with was that the characters were so relatable. Underneath all the sex talk, cosmos and Manolos they were just four women going through the same issues as me and my girlfriends and it was entertaining to see how they dealt with everything life threw at them.

Now that I look back though I realize that the show might have also taught me a few things about love, life and fashion along the way.

Here are twelve things I learned from watching Sex and the City:

Lesson 1: It doesn’t matter if you fall down in life as long as you get back up and keep on walking

Just maybe don’t brag to people that you can walk in super high heels ’cause that’s kind of asking for it really…

Lesson 2: Don’t be afraid to live by your own rules

Don’t live your life to meet other people’s standards and expectations.Trust your instincts and do what makes you happy. It’s OK not to have kids, it’s OK not to get married, it’s OK to spend all of your money on clothes (well alright, maybe not that one).

♥ Lesson 3: It doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you’re fu#cking fabulous

So many people obsess about getting older but if there’s anything the girls from SATC have taught us is that you can be fabulous at any age. Just own it ladies!

Lesson 4: Some guys just ‘aren’t that into you’.

We can try and make all the excuses we want but really – if a guy’s not calling you or making an effort to see you then he’s just not that into you! Better you stop wasting your time, send him to the island of lost men and get yourself some ice cream.

Lesson 5: Don’t have sex with the curtains open

You just never know who might be watching.

Lesson 6: Unless you get pregnant, become a single mother and stop having time to eat, you’ll probably never fit into your skinny jeans again.

And as Samantha puts it: ‘there’s a diet I won’t be trying’.

Lesson 7: Just because a guy is really, really nice it doesn’t mean that he’s the one

I think everyone got a little mad at Carrie when she broke Aidan’s heart (twice!) but at the end of the day she knew deep down that he wasn’t the one for her.

♥ Lesson 8:  Humor always wins out

Bald heads, hairy backs…none of that stuff matters when you find the right guy,  because ‘in the end, you just want to be with the one who makes you laugh’ (Mr. BIG).

Lesson 9: You should NEVER break up with anyone on a post it

Just NO.

♥ Lesson 10: You probably shouldn’t marry a man who says ‘alrighty’

And who has a mother called Bunny, can’t get it up, nicknames his penis schooner… the list goes on.

Bottom line – Don’t ignore the signs just because you want the fairytale ending!

♥ Lesson 11: Cherish your friendships

Because ‘no matter who broke your heart, or how long it takes to heal, you’ll never get through it without your friends‘ (Carrie).

♥ Lesson 12: Love yourself

As Carrie says in the end of the series: ‘The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you YOU love, well, that’s just fabulous’.

Did you love SATC as much as I did? What were your favorite parts in the series?
