Mulled wine is the quintessential Winter warm-up drink. It conjures up memories of snow, ski trips and evenings by the fire and the smell of spices and orange peel wafting through the kitchen always brings with it a certain feeling of nostalgia. After trying out a few variations, I finally came up with my own favorite recipe below. To me, it strikes the perfect balance between sweet, rich and spicy and makes for a wonderfully mellow drink. Welcome to my Winter Wonderland!
Spiced Mulled Wine (serves 5)
Peel and juice of one small orange
Peel and juice of 1/2 lemon
1 Cinnamon stick
1 star anise
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 tsp of freshly grated ginger
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 bottle of Red Wine (I used Chianti but any fruity wine would do)
1/4 cup of Brandy (optional)
♥ Put all of the ingredients into a saucepan over medium heat.
♥ Stir to dissolve sugar, reduce heat to low and let wine simmer for at least 30 mins. Do not boil or the alcohol will evaporate!
♥ Take wine off the heat and, using a fine mesh sieve, pour into heat-proof glasses.
♥ Decorate as you wish and cozy up by the fire!
