How was your week? I have a sneaky feeling you deserve a drink and if you live in my part of the world – a very hot one! Apparently Melbourne’s just experienced its coldest month of July in over 20 years, yikes!
Thankfully, Spring is only three weeks away now so I guess we might as well embrace what’s left of the Winter season, right? Bring on the ice skating, hot soups and warm drinks I say! Especially if said warm drinks come in the form of mulled cider. Yum.
Now I know Apple cider is the traditional choice for mulled cider, but I still hope you’ll give this pear version a try because it’s soooo good. Pear and cinnamon is always a winning combo if you ask me but the added spices and ginger really take this sweet concoction to the next level. Not to mention your whole house will smell divine whilst you brew your cocktail…
I added a cinnamon sugar rim to my glass as a pretty garnish but feel free to skip that step if you want to!
Mulled Pear Cider
Ingredients (serves 2)
2 cups (1/2 liter) of pear cider
2 tbsp brandy or dark rum (optional)
1 tbsp of fresh ginger, sliced
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp all spice
1 tbsp honey (or white sugar)
For the cinnamon sugar rim (optional)
2 tbsp cinnamon sugar
1 pear, sliced
To rim the glass:
Pour the sugar onto a chopping board. Run a slice of pear around the edge of your glass to moisten it. Then turn the glass upside down and dip it into the sugar. Repeat with the second glass.
For the mulled cider:
Combine all of the ingredients into a medium sized saucepan placed over low heat. Bring to a gentle simmer and strain into heat proof glasses.
NB: This recipe can also be made with apple cider or even apple juice for a non-alcoholic version!
