October Favourites: Movies That Play With Your Mind

.

Although I’m a real sucker for Romantic Comedies (much to my partner’s dismay) the movies that truly stay with me are the ones that play with my mind and force me to think outside the box. I’ve managed to narrow down my favourite mind-bending movie list to the five following movies, would they make your top 5?

5 – The Matrix

I hesitated in listing this one actually as the rest of the trilogy ruined it for me a little bit to be honest… but then again I don’t think you can talk about mind bending movies without mentioning The Matrix. The fight scenes and special effects set the standards for many movies to come and I think it has stood the test of time pretty well actually. When it first came out, I remember walking out of the movie theatre and being so excited about the film whilst my date was completely unimpressed by it and thought it was just ok. Needless to say, things didn’t work out between us.

4 – Mulholland Drive

Watching a David Lynch movie is like going into a maze at Disneyland, except that it’s dark and twisted and there are no nice tour guides to show you the way out when you get lost. To this day I’m still not sure what this movie is about, which infuriates me to no end. And yet, just the idea of finally understanding it makes me want to watch it again. Guess I’m a freak like that.

3 – Requiem For A Dream

If this movie about three friends who slowly descend into drug addiction doesn’t put you off from ever wanting to try harder drugs then I don’t know what will. I can’t say too much about the movie without ruining it for you if you haven’t seen it yet but let’s just say that its ending left me reeling for days. Actually, I think I’m still traumatized by it. Anyway…aside from the gritty topic, it is amazingly shot, superbly acted and features one of the best soundtrack I’ve ever heard.

2 – Inception

There are so many things I love about this movie: the cast (I love you Leo!), the dream within the dream scenario, the French music, the cinematography…The list goes on! I just think Christopher Nolan is a freakin’ genius and I can’t wait to see what he does next…

1 – Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

The perfect spin on the ‘true love conquers all’ story… and also one of my favorite movies of all time. I can watch it over and over again and pick up on little things I hadn’t noticed before as the script is so clever and has so many layers to it. I wasn’t sure about Jim Carrey being able to play a non comical character at first but he and Kate Winslet have such an amazing chemistry that you quickly forget about any other movies that he might have been in. A must watch.
