The Spring Racing Carnival is about to kick off in Melbourne and I’m getting really excited! Not so much about the gambling and racing part (although it’s always nice to win something ;) but mostly about the dressing up and partying part. Mark and I are actually going to attend a couple of races this year so for once I have a good excuse to look at pretty outfits online!
I’ve rounded up 20 pretty dresses which I think would be perfect for a racing event below. There are 3 major fashion-focused races during the spring carnival here (Derby Day, Melbourne Cup, and Oaks Day) so I’ve divided my list according to each ‘dress code’.
Don’t forget about accessories though – stylish comfy shoes and a hat/ or fascinator are definitely a must. Check out my previous guide on what to wear to the races for more tips and style inspiration!
Have you ever been to a horse racing event? What did you wear?
Derby Day is the first big event of the season and black and white outfits are traditionally worn on that day. It’s my favorite dress code as I feel monochrome always looks classic and chic. I also love to add touches of color through makeup and accessories although there’s nothing wrong with keeping things simple instead.

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous race, so much so that it’s said ‘to stop the nation’ and even warrants an official holiday here in Victoria. On Melbourne Cup day, you can be a bit more daring in your fashion choices and opt for bright colors, bold accessories, and a few glam’ touches. It’s important to stay classy though – nothing too short or revealing or you might regret it later once you’ve had a few glasses and champagne and have a ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

Oaks day is also know as ‘ladies day’ and it’s the perfect occasion to wear really pretty, girly outfits. Think tea/garden party attire and go for floral prints, floaty fabrics and feminine cuts… Or wear whichever feels most feminine to you – after all, it’s your day ladies! ;)
Wishing you a great spring racing season!
