Perfect Pout: How To Wear Bright Lipstick

When it comes to lipsticks, the bright lips trend is definitely here to stay.

Whilst alluring, the prospect of sporting bright lips can also seem a bit daunting at first. Personally I’m always a little worried that I might end up looking like a clown when wearing a bright lipstick and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one!

This is why I turned to my friend MJ Valentine, makeup artist extraordinaire, for some advice on how to rock this hot beauty trend. Here are her top five tips to achieve the perfect bold pout:

♥ Prep

To avoid your lipstick ‘flaking’ make sure that you moisturize your lips before applying your bright lipstick. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate your lips beforehand. You can easily make your own lip scrub using brown sugar and a tiny bit of olive oil- just gently massage a small amount into the lips until the sugar starts to dissolve and voila!

Always use a lip liner (up to two shades darker than your lipstick) when using bold lipsticks. If you go outside the lines instead of trying to wipe it off with a tissue, use a small brush with a small bit of concealer to tidy up the edges- this will help to make lines sharper and prevent any stains.

♥ Pick the right shade

Not all bright lipsticks are created equal so make sure to choose a shade that complements your natural skin tone. If you have a fair complexion then a softer shade with peachy undertones will probably work best for you whilst medium toned complexion will often suit something brighter. The best idea is to head to a make up counter and ask to try a few different shades until you find the right one or you.

Keep the rest of the look fairly neutral

Work on a nice, clean base, and finish with neutral eye shadows (or coppery for an evening look) and a clean black eyeliner. You want the attention to be focused on your gorgeous bright lips!

♥ Be confident

Once you’ve found the perfect lipstick for you don’t be afraid to wear it with confidence! Like I said, I used to feel a bit nervous about wearing a bright lipsticks but now that I’ve worn my Morange lipstick a few times I barely notice its brightness anymore! Also, if you’re still unsure about sporting a bright lipstick then you can always start with lip stains or color balms and slowly build up to bolder colors!
