If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you’ll probably already know that I’m a big fan of Caroline’s blog ‘Sparkles and Crumbs‘. She was one of the first bloggers to approach me when I started blogging and we’ve been virtual friends ever since. What I admire the most in Caroline (besides her ability to juggle a demanding full-time job and a fabulous blog) is her natural knack for incorporating style and old school glamor into every aspect of her everyday life.   This is also reflected in her travel style which is why I was so excited when she agreed to do this interview!

What was your best ever holiday?
I’d have to say my first ever big adventure – backpacking around Europe for a summer with my best friend when we were eighteen. Tapas in Barcelona, art in Florence, gelato in Rome, glassblowing in Venice, sea and sun in Corfu, lake boating in Slovenia, and Audrey Hepburn movies at outdoor cinemas in Paris… it was glorious! And, of course, we ignored my father’s pessimistic advice to pack practical but ugly waterproofs and hiking boots, and filled our backpacks with cute sundresses, comfortable but stylish flats and sandals, and plenty of room for souvenirs!

Are you a full suitcase or carry-on only kind of gal?
Definitely carry-on-only – as a naturally impatient person, I can’t wait to get out of Arrivals and to my destination as speedily as possible, and I can’t bear hanging around at the luggage carousel!

What are two items of clothing you never travel without?
My travels tend to involve temperate city breaks or serious sun-and-sea vacations – so I can’t be without a stylish pair of sunglasses, and my trusty Zara trench-coat. It’s light enough to sling over my arm without noticing it if the day heats up, is a perfect cover-up at night-time, and goes with everything!

What’s always in your carry on?
I cheerily request samples of cleanser, make-up remover, moisturizer etc. from my favorite beauty counters, like Clinique or Clarins, to take up as little room in my hand luggage allowance as possible. A BB cream and bright red lipstick work wonders to keep as fresh-faced as possible whilst flying. A good book and my iPod [with a carefully curated playlist to fit my destination!] are also a must.

At La Bocca della Vertia [my Greg Peck-related pilgrimage!] Wearing: A 20 Euro polkadot dress from a little shop near the Spanish Steps which I didn’t take off for the entire holiday, and my Indiana Jones-style boots from New Look.
Where is your favorite place to shop in the world?
The Guerlain shop on the Champs Elysees… heaven! And I love browsing Dior and Valentino on the Via dei Condotti in Rome, although, alas, that’s strictly window shopping… For non-fashion and more literary finds, Shakespeare & Co in Paris is a bibliophile’s paradise.

Speedboating about in Tenerife. A vintage white swimsuit from Mela Mela, sunglasses from a street vendor in Venice, headscarf from Accessorize

What’s the best item you’ve ever bought whilst on holiday?
I tend to spend my money on food, cocktails [of course!], and experiences when I’m on holiday, rather than things to take home – but I’m still in love with the simple navy jersey dress I bought for a song in a little shop in Florence whilst backpacking.

What’s your number 1 tip to stay stylish whilst on holiday?
For city holidays, shoes you can walk in all day comfortably which still look cute are my number 1 requirement. Try well-worn ballet flats or gladiator sandals in summer, and cozy leather boots in colder climes.

Dressing for the February chills in Paris. Red woollen beret and pashmina from a shop in the Latin Quarter, cape and black boots from Dorothy Perkins, short black dress from H&M, M&S cashmere tights.

Where will you go next?
Funny you should ask… I’m off to Rome next week with my cousin! Two holidays in the last two weeks is probably my personal record!

At the top of my favourite rooftop bar in Rome! Anthropologie blazer [it came in a set with some cute matching shorts], Oliver Bonas dress

Thank you for answering all my questions Caroline! Happy travels!
