This is one of my ‘The stylish tourist’ interviews in which I chat to experienced travelers from around the world about their traveling fashion style and favorite overseas experiences. Today I’m excited to feature Monica from 45 Fairmont in Los Angeles. Her fabulous lifestyle blog is full of fashion and travel gems so make sure you check it out after reading the interview!
1. How often do you travel and what has been your favorite place to visit so far?
I travel about once a month. A few months ago I was traveling even more, up to three times a month. I love being on the go and exploring new places. So far this year my favorite place to visit is Nashville, TN. I have friends there and it’s such a fun city with so much to do. Between the live music and the great food, you just can’t go wrong there. My favorite place to travel overall though is Barcelona. I traveled there every year growing up and it’s my second home.
2. How would you describe your travel fashion style?
My travel fashion style is all about comfort. I once wore a skirt on a flight from Los Angeles to New York and quickly realized it was a mistake when I had to lift my bag into the overhead compartment.
3. Full suitcase or carry-on only?
I go through different phases on my stance on this. On one hand I like to check a back because I don’t have to worry about it the majority of the trip. That extra bag comes in handy when I want to bring my Starbucks on board. However, if I know I wont have a lot of time to wait for my bag or if I know that airport is particularly slow with their bags (I’m talking about you, LAX terminal 1), I’ll make sure to carry it on.
4. Are there any clothing items you never travel without?
I never travel without a blanket scarf or jeans. The blanket scarf is a necessity even during the summertime. You never know if it’s going to be cold on board because of the air conditioning.
5. Do you have any favorite ‘packing hacks’?
I like to use tissue paper as separators between clothes and shoes in my suitcase.
6. How do you find great places to eat, drink and shop whilst overseas?
When I’m overseas, I like to take the “local not tourist” approach. I like to go to the places where locals go regularly instead of going to the places that are on the list of places to go if you’re visiting. It makes a much more authentic experience.
7. What beauty products do you like to take with you on holiday?
I try to keep the number of beauty products I take with me to a minimum. I’ll bring sunscreen, tinted moisturizer, an eye shadow palette, mascara, eyeliner and lipstick. Low maintenance and little clutter is the way to go.
8. What was the best item you ever bought overseas?
The best item I ever bought overseas was my first Chanel bag in Barcelona. I bought it almost 10 years ago and it’s still my favourite go-to bag.
9. Where are off to next?
My next trip is to Kansas City, MO (my hometown) for a blogger’s conference!
Thank you so much for answering my questions Monica! Can’t wait to see more of your outfits on your blog in the future.
