Last week, my Honey and I hosted our first party of the year (see this post to read more about my party challenge for the year) : a fun tropical backyard fest!
The weather wasn’t the best on the morning of the big day (which made me slightly nervous whilst setting up the decorations outside and look up ‘indoor tropical party ideas’ on google a few times) but thankfully the thundery clouds made way to gorgeous blue skies just before we were due to start. Yay! It was a gorgeous evening filled with good food, laughs, and of course – punch ;) I had so much fun in fact that I completely forgot to take more shots once the guests had arrived, oops – I’ll do better next time I promise!
See all the party set-up and details below:
To make the outdoor area feels more cozy, we brought some of our indoor furniture out – such as the coffee table, bar cart, rugs, cushions, dining room table etc. This also allowed us to create separate areas so that people could mingle and move around easily.
I wanted the party to have a tropical vibe but to still feel chic and modern so when it came to choosing decorations I *tried* to restrain myself. I picked a few bright, tropical – themed items (pineapples, flamingoes, and greenery) and kept the rest of the decor very neutral. I also mainly focused my decorating efforts on one area – the drinks and dessert buffet table – so that I could make an impact without having to spend tons on decorations.
My hubby actually made the pretty tropical backdrop using palm leaves and flowers we found at the markets and in our garden. I have to say, I was quite impressed by his work! Perhaps I need to add ‘florist’ to his dj and cocktail-making party skills now ;).
The flamingoes were borrowed from a friend but I kind of wish I had bought them to be honest as I’d be very happy for them them live in my garden forever! Looking at them just makes me happy :)
We decided to have a bbq dinner so everyone brought their favorite meat, veggies and salads.
I also prepared the following items:
- Jerk chicken with mango salsa
- Shrimp accras (fritters)
- Hawaiian-style BBQ pulled pork sandwiches
- Pina colada cupcakes (people raved about them so I’d definitely recommend this recipe!)
- A fruit platter + watermelon slices
It ended up being quite a feast!
‘Tropical party’ equals ‘punch’ (in my mind anyway) so I made two big batches of ‘Tropical Paradise’ punch using the recipe below.
Tropical Paradise punch
- 1 1/2 cup of spiced dark rum
- 2 cups pineapple juice
- 2 cups orange juice
- 1/2 cup cointreau (you can also use triple sec)
- 1/4 cup lime juice
- orange slices ( the equivalent to 1 orange)
- lime slices (equivalent of 1 lime)
We also offered beer, sparkling wine, and juices. One of my friends also made a yummy virgin cocktail punch.
We started the evening with a ‘party in paradise’ type mix we found on Spotify. It was a great way to get people into the right mood from the moment they walked in!
